Our organic Tiger nuts come from Alboraia in Valencia, where Enric Navarro has championed organic growing methods, working with the land’s natural cycles, avoiding the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides, and annually rotating the crop with organically-grown vegetables to produce tiger nuts of an exceptional quality. Tiger nuts were so prized by the ancient Egyptians that they have been found in burial tombs amongst other treasured possessions. Known as ‘chufa’ in Spain, these little tubers are packed with taste and healthful qualities.
They can be eaten just as they are, or you can add water to soften them slightly, eating them as a snack, ground or crushed to use in desserts, biscuits and granola or blended into smoothies. They can be soaked and crushed to make the traditional sweet, milky tasting Spanish drink Horchata. They are also delicious in combination with dried fruits such as dates or figs.
Tiger nuts grown in Valencia have an intense, sweet flavour. They are highly nutritious containing vitamin C and E as well as phosphorous, potassium, fibre and a good energy rich balance of natural sugars and proteins. It has also been suggested that Tiger nut consumption can help to prevent heart attack and reduce the risk of colon cancer.
